Research Summary

A plain-language review of the science behind this course.

Everything in this course rests on a growing body of research from psychology, neuroscience, and trauma studies. The summary below is not exhaustive — it is a map of the strands you can pull on if you want to go deeper.

Pattern recognition and expert intuition

Gary Klein and colleagues studied experts working under time pressure — firefighters deciding when to evacuate a building, nurses catching a decline before the monitors did, chess masters choosing a move in seconds. They found that experienced practitioners routinely make correct decisions through non-conscious pattern matching that outperforms slower, analytical reasoning in complex, real-time situations. Intuition, in these fields, is compressed experience.

Practical implication: your gut is not random. It is a lifetime of pattern recognition running faster than language.

Somatic markers and embodied decision-making

Antonio Damasio studied patients with damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex — the region that integrates emotional-body feedback into decisions. Their IQ, memory, and logic remained intact, but their lives collapsed because they could no longer feel the subtle bodily cues that guide ordinary choices. He called these cues somatic markers.

Practical implication: emotion is not the opposite of good judgment. It is a required ingredient.

Interoception

Interoception is the ability to accurately sense internal bodily states — heartbeat, breath, gut, temperature, tension. Researchers including Lisa Feldman Barrett, A.D. Craig, and Sarah Garfinkel have shown that people with higher interoceptive accuracy tend to have better emotional regulation, more nuanced emotional vocabulary, and greater accuracy in reading others.

Practical implication: the more clearly you can feel yourself, the more clearly you can read a situation.

Polyvagal theory

Stephen Porges' framework describes how the autonomic nervous system moves between three states: ventral vagal (safety and social engagement), sympathetic (mobilisation, fight-or-flight), and dorsal vagal (shutdown and freeze). Clear perception, connection, and higher-order thinking are only fully available in the safe state.

Practical implication: intuition requires safety. Regulation is not optional — it is the ground the signal grows in.

Attachment

John Bowlby, Mary Ainsworth, Amir Levine, and Gabor Maté have shown that early relational patterns shape how safe we feel in later relationships — and, critically, how quickly we override our own signals to preserve connection. People with insecure attachment often distrust their own perception because doing so was, at one point, adaptive.

Practical implication: relearning to trust your intuition often begins with relearning that it is safe to have your own experience.

The through-line

Together, these strands describe intuition not as a mystical add-on but as a fully embodied, fully biological, fully human intelligence — one that becomes clearer as the body becomes safer, the nervous system becomes more regulated, and the self becomes more honestly known.
